HÁBITAT /XXXII FESTIVAL INTERNACIONAL MADRID EN DANZA

Roger Salas, DIARIO EL PAIS, 22.11.2017

Within minutes of starting, quality, precision in the work, and the commitment of the artists prevailed, affirming that age-old wisdom: it’s not a matter of quantity or size but of quality, professionalism, and ingenious nuances. In this show, there is no fear of mixing and variety, nor of experimentation. It presents a contemporary discourse where craftsmanship and good dance shine, highlighting extensive prior work. Gone are the days of enjoying academic ballet. We are witnessing current art. Daniel Doña seeks an intelligent clearing of classical figures in Spanish dance and other forms of flamenco ballet, through a subtle and progressive construction that leads to a geometry of firm angles.”

RETROSPECTIVA 2.0 |THE BODY AS A SCENIC SPACE

Teobaldos, DIARIO DE NAVARRA, 16.05.2018 | Universidad de Navarra

Daniel  Doña breaks the seams of conventional movements to explore and transcend the fourth wall, asserting that the true stage is the body upon which an honest, innovative, and open dance rests, yet perfectly grounded in extensive technical preparation and knowledge of classical and flamenco styles. There is intuition, elegance, exploration, risk, contemporary dance without limits—a lesson in art, a delight in beauty, always beauty.”

HÁBITAT /TANZHAUS NRW - DÜSSELDORF

Susanne Zellinger, FLAMENCO DIVINO, 06.04.2017

Daniel Doña and Cristian Martín are two of the most important representatives of Spanish Dance. Last night, they created a Habitat that could be performed and find its place in any theater worldwide—a perfect combination of tradition and avant-garde, a sophisticated and light-hearted show. Accompanied by Alfredo Valero, a musician with a strong stage presence, Daniel and Cristian danced “Córdoba de Albéniz,” an exquisite Pas de Deux, almost weightless, belonging to the Spanish Dance repertoire, and accompanied by beautiful lighting by Olga García. The traditional singing of David Vázquez through Romances was powerful, a journey into tradition emphasizing a purist approach through the naked voice, without the accompaniment of any instrument. A night like a breath of wind, which, when it had barely begun, had already ended.

HÁBITAT /XXXII FESTIVAL INTERNACIONAL MADRID EN DANZA

Julio Bravo, DIARIO ABC, 23.11.2017

Daniel Doña has become one of the most innovative choreographers in our dance scene, always characterized by his desire to break down walls and barriers, incorporating diverse elements into his flamenco vernacular. With Hábitat, he goes even further—a show that overflows with interwoven styles, influences, and preferences. Both Daniel Doña and Cristian Martín, the dancers, showcase their splendid technique, rigor, and quality in the performance. This quality extends to the musicians, the singer David Vázquez and the accordionist Alfredo Valero, who provide a rare and rich musical backdrop to the show.

NO PAUSA / DANIEL DOÑA'S ECLECTIC DANCE

Flamenco Madrid / Suma Flamenca. Ignacio Suárez-Zuloaga

NO PAUSA is an innovative, eclectic, well-executed show with choreography that gains strength through a varied and sophisticated evolution led by Daniel Doña’s brilliant company. The original recorded music by Héctor González makes way for expertly played flamenco compositions by Francisco Vinuesa and sung by the excellent David Vázquez. The choreographic result, complemented by elaborate lighting designed by Olga García, is more than good, and, even more importantly for me, it demonstrates innovation and a willingness to experiment in the choreography of this company. Hopefully, we’ll see more from Daniel Doña and his team soon.

WHITHOUT A DOUBT, ONE OF THE BEST SHOWS OF THE SUMMER.

This results in striking images where the beauty of posture and gesture intertwines with innovative choreography, leading to a dark and rugged no-man’s land that deeply moves. Four interdisciplinary artists, distinct yet united by their honesty, interest in experimentation, and technical prowess, traverse the timeless realm of flamenco, kept alive by figures like Doña and the outstanding company that surrounds him.
